What is psychiatry?
Psychiatry is the branch of medicine focused on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental, emotional, and behavioral conditions — the field of medicine devoted to the brain's processes. A simple way to think of it: if neurology cares for the brain's hardware, psychiatry cares for its software — how we think, feel, and behave. Because psychiatrists are physicians, they consider both mind and body, and diagnose and treat problems such as depression, anxiety, and ADHD, along with the interconnected challenges that show up in human behavior, emotions, and thoughts.
What happens at the first appointment?
Your first visit is a comprehensive 60-minute diagnostic evaluation. We review your history, current challenges, and goals, and together decide on a plan — which may include mental training, therapy, medication management, or a combination.
What's the difference between a psychiatrist and a therapist?
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who evaluates the whole picture — medical, psychological, and social — makes diagnoses, and can prescribe medication when appropriate. Dr. Theo provides both medical psychiatric care and emotional and behavioral therapy, so your care stays in one place.
Do I have to take medication?
No. Medication is one tool among many, and many patients do well with therapy and mental training alone. When medication is appropriate, it is discussed openly and monitored closely. Medication prescribing is currently available for California residents.
What ages do you work with?
I provide care for children (5+), adolescents, and adults. My approach for younger patients includes thoughtful collaboration with families when appropriate, while maintaining discretion and respect for the child or teen’s autonomy.
Is my care confidential?
Yes. Your information is kept private and your records are confidential, with only the narrow exceptions required by law. The practice is fee-for-service and does not bill insurance directly, which adds a further layer of privacy.
Are visits available by video?
Yes — all visits are conducted by secure telemedicine video. In-person appointments are not available at this time.
Do you accept insurance?
As an out-of-network physician, I do not contract with insurance companies or participate in provider networks. This allows me to provide highly personalized, unhurried, and confidential care without the limitations often imposed by insurance-driven models. Payment is due at the time of service. Many of my patients choose to work with me because they value a level of care that prioritizes discretion, responsiveness, and clinical excellence. Upon request, I am happy to provide a detailed superbill that you may submit to your insurance carrier for possible out-of-network reimbursement, depending on your plan.
How much does it cost?
The practice is fee-for-service and out-of-network, with payment due at the time of service. A detailed fee schedule for the initial consultation and follow-up visits is provided within the application, before you commit to anything, and a superbill is available on request for possible out-of-network reimbursement.
How soon can I be seen?
New-patient availability is limited and offered on a rolling basis. Once your application is reviewed, the practice reaches out by email to coordinate scheduling — usually within 1–2 business days.
Which states can you see patients in?
All visits are conducted by secure telemedicine video. Medication prescribing is currently available for California residents; patients in other states — or outside the U.S. — can still apply for mental training and performance work. Your specific situation is confirmed during the application.
How do I get started?
